Like it or not, celebrity styles usually indicate the next wave in fashion trends. The more stars that jump on board a new twist on an old look, the more likely it is to sweep the malls and thus, land in our own closets. Recently, there have been some pretty distinct styles that allow many body shape variations to play around with trendy jeans. We can thank Katie Holmes for pushing this one into the hands of the masses. Over a year ago she was first seen sporting relaxed to baggy fit jeans haphazardly rolled up to the ankle. This was all during a major skinny jeans and liquid leggings storm. At first it didn't seem like it would be able to stay afloat with all the jeans getting tighter and tighter, but soon enough, there was a mini backlash to all the body-hugging styles and the boyfriend jeans became a major fashion staple.
The look has even been spotted frequently on Reese Witherspoon, Rachel Bilson and Amanda Peet. Whether on the boyfriend style or on skinny jeans, distressed, ripped and shredded jeans have been seen all over the Hollywood set. With some clever cuts in just the right places, noticeably the knees and just about the knee on the thinnest part of the thigh, distressed denim is here to stay, at least for a while. Distressed wearing celebs include Katie Holmes, once again, Rihanna and Lindsay Lohan. The ubiquitous jeggings, also known as faux leggings and jean leggings, has clearly become a fan staple amongst celebrity and non-celebs alike. Not only do they have that great skinny look, the legging aspect makes them ridiculously comfortable to wear, especially when sitting for longer periods such as during class or even at work. The second-skin look has become a favorite of Sienna Miller, Taylor Swift and Beyonce Knowles. If you've got the confidence, and the budget, to handle dipping into every fashion trend, these three choices: boyfriend, distressed and jeggings, are a great jumping off point. Experiment with what fits your body type, then enjoy the fun of fast fashion.
This past weekend, I did a little spring cleaning (I know, I'm a little late). As I went through my clothes, I found an old pair of jeans that didn't fit anymore, but were still in good shape. If this has ever happened to you, do not throw them away! Old denim makes great material for tons of craft projects. An interesting idea for crafts using old jeans is to make denim slippers. Making denim slippers is pretty easy and it's fun. I prefer to use worn-looking jeans for this project, but any type of jeans will do. If you're really feeling creative, try using colored denim jeans. Sadly, I do have a pair of bright green jeans lying around, but that's another story. 1. Take your jeans and turn them over so that the jean's pockets are facing the ceiling. Stick your feet inside the pockets and make sure your feet have enough room.
The pockets will turn into the cover for the slippers. 2. Take the legs of the jeans, or whatever section you want to use for the base of the slippers, and on each leg, cut off a portion big enough to accommodate the length of your foot. Once cut, turn both sections inside out. 3. Take cardboard, and while wearing flip flops, use a marker to trace around your shoes. Cut out each one to create two cardboard inserts. 4. Place the cardboard inserts on the inside-out jean sections and using Tailor's chalk, trace around each one of the cardboard cut outs. 5. For each cut-out section, use straight pins to hold both layers of the jeans in place. Cut off the access material around the chalk line for each foot outline. 6. Use a sewing machine and stitch the layers together for both sections. Leave one side of the fabric open to insert a foam padding. 7. Trace the cardboard cut-outs on top of the foam and cut out two foam inserts. 8. Take your denim slipper bases and turn them right side going out playsuits. Place the cardboard cut outs inside each slipper, followed by the foam inserts. Sew both seams closed. 9. Take the pockets of your jeans from step 1. and cut them out, being careful not to cut into the seam. 10. Slide each slipper base into the pockets. Align and straighten the pockets until you like where they're positioned. Sew the pockets onto the underside of the denim slipper bases. 11. Now the fun part: if your jean pockets weren't already embellished, add on whatever you want. Give them some sparkle with self-adhesive jewels, or add on a pink ribbon for a cute, feminine touch.
These days, jeans are becoming a basic building block of any wardrobe. Almost everywhere around the globe, you see people wearing jeans. From high-waist pants, capris, and cargos to tattered jeans and cigarette pants, the variety seems infinite. Jeans are becoming such a moth-eaten that they're coming to close quarters with being a total faux-pas. But how do you squeeze out a savvy style for your jeans without becoming too distinct? For low-waist jeans, use navel diamonds and gems to accentuate a cute belly-button. You can also wrap silver chain-belts around your tummy, to shimmer while you dance "the bump". For a totally 70's look, add on colorful bangles and large hoop rings. For capris, wear anklets - either a slim gold chain to accent a trim ankle or ethnic beads for a "beach-babe" look. You can also add hip body bags for a sportier look. For cargos, those handy Swiss knives bring action to your jeans, as do large backpacks. You can also wear Buddha beads which bring luck for extreme adventures. For high-waist pants, use large dark-colored snakeskin belts to hide the height of the waist. Never use bright colored or diamond belts - it'll grab all the attention. For tattered or ripped jeans, wear kerchief belts for a handy-man look. You can also position a kerchief in your backpocket to call attention to a sexy bottom. Don't use overpolished accessories with the grunge look such as diamond or leather belts - it's an extreme combination. For loose or baggy jeans, more oversized chains clipped from the belt-line to your pocket give you a "gangsta" look. So do vintage pocket-watches, which bring out the "hip-hop" style. And if you're in for the "chicano" look, wear plaids as well as bandanas or hairnets. For cigarette pants, use "l-mac" (colored-transparent plastic) belts for a "be-bop" look. Gold or silver jewelry and fancy anklets can also dress up your jeans.
